Non-Basic Black Outfit for a Brand New Year featuring Vinyl Leggings.

A pair of vinyl leggings with a vegan leather puffer jacket to storm into 2023.

Welcome to 2023, pals! Are you in the winter doldrums regarding styling, or is it just me? So I’m here to spice things up not just in terms of winter outfits, but all-black winter outfits. Let’s dig into this anything-but-boring look featuring a pair of vinyl leggings, which is part of the new issue of Kansas City Homes & Style.

This look is about playing with textures and fits: oversized, bodycon, shiny vinyl, chunky knit, etc. I started with this sweater from LALA for the cozy (and sass) factor. It’s the ultimate lounge-around sweater, but I was looking to dress it up. That’s where these killer vinyl leggings from Spanx came in. (Yes, they’re expensive. But they also don’t have a seam up the center front, which means you don’t have to battle a weird camel toe situation. That justifies it for me, ha.)

I wanted a statement shoe– and something that could navigate any potential January snow and ice– so a pair of rugged combat boots with a chunky heel came to my rescue. This pair is one of my favorites! They added more shine to the look, with a healthy dose of toughness.

To finish the outfit, I slipped into a cropped vegan leather puffer jacket. A classic après ski staple, this jacket takes on a super modern vibe when made out of faux leather. Plus, more texture! All of this combined to make an all-black ensemble anything but boring.

I love the way the sweater and the vinyl leggings play together. I leveraged my sweater tuck hack, since tucking a sweater into leggings is just going to add unwanted midsection bulk. To do this, take the hem of your top and tuck it into the band of your bra. Voila! The look of a tucked-in sweater without the bulk.

And another reason to love these combat boots? They’re super comfy. The heel is manageable (and sturdy!) and I can wear these bad boys all day/night and not worry about sore, achy feet.
