Products to protect your hair from spring and summer weather.
I do love this time of year. Everything awakens from a long winter hibernation and comes alive in the form of blooming trees, green grass, and bright sunshine-filled afternoons. The promise of summer is just around the corner; days heating up into the 80s, shorts and summer dresses in heavy rotation, and beach vacations booked.
But as much as I adore warm weather, it can be tough on my hair. I’m forever fighting frizz with KC’s humidity, chlorine pools further dry out my hair, and more time spent in the sun means I need to up my UV protection game. What’s a girl to do? Head to Beauty Brands, stock up, and work some heavy-hitting products into her hair routine. Let’s dig in!
Moisture, please.
My stylist, Stephanie, has been drilling the moisture mantra into me for years now. “Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize– you can’t give your hair enough moisture.” (You’ve heard this before!) And she’s so right– moisturized hair is happy, healthy hair. I tend to be on the dry + coarse side anyway, so when you add in notoriously drying services like routine lightening and toning, your girl really needs to put moisture at the forefront of her hair care routine. I just used up this Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner, and would definitely repurchase. It’s super hydrating and color-safe.
The Redken Frizz Dismiss shampoo and conditioner are great shower additions because they hydrate while cutting down on frizz. You guys already know about my intense feelings for Amika products; they recently relaunched their cult line and I’m super curious to see if this mask is as moisturizing as its predecessor.
Fight that frizz.
Humidity is a food group during a Kansas City summer; the air gets so thick here you can cut + eat it with knife and fork! Muggy, humid air means my normally beachy waves skew out of control with frizz. Now, I’m a girl who loves some rough texture– but super frizzy, frazzled strands aren’t my jam. Here are a few products I’m including in my routine to keep the frizz to a minimum. My strategy: don’t think about just one holy grail product to stop frizz in its tracks; include a multitude of frizz-fighters to really hammer your smooth agenda home.
I start with a leave-in conditioner, like this one from It’s a 10. (It has so many benefits, but frizz-fighting is one ’em!) Then I’ll work in this curl-defining gel to lock in waves and also minimize frizz. I love this formula; it’s great for air-drying and doesn’t leave tresses crunchy. Once my hair is dry, I like to refresh with some nourishing oil on the mid-shaft through the ends to add a little moisture + keep frizz at bay between washes. I’m a fan of this cult-classic from Moroccan Oil. I’ve been using it for ages! They also have a light version for my fine-haired pals.
SPF for your hair, not just your skin.
Just like you have to protect your hair from heat styling (I love this blow out spray and this heat protectant spray), you need to protect your hair from the sun. UV rays can damage and fade your color– which means all those hard-earned dollars you spent at the salon are vaporizing into thin air while you’re trying to get your BBQ on in mid-June.
I love this spray from Living Proof because it not only protects against UV rays, but it also blocks humidity. Now that’s a summer cocktail I’m interested in trying. I’m also excited to give this Amika spray a test-drive because it shields the hair against the sun, humidity, and adds a dose of keratin to moisturize. A one-stop spray!
